Kedarkantha Trek – The Winter Queen of India

About the Trek

The Kedarkantha Trek is widely regarded as the most popular winter trek in India, offering a true summit-climb experience without the need for technical mountaineering skills. Perfect for beginners and rewarding for seasoned trekkers, this trek is a classic Himalayan winter adventure.

The trail begins from Sankri village (6,400 ft), a remote and culturally rich hamlet in Uttarakhand where traditional wooden houses and local folklore define everyday life. As the trek begins, you walk through dense pine and oak forests that shield you from harsh winter winds. During peak winter months, these forest floors are buried under deep snow, creating a magical, storybook-like landscape.

One of the most iconic highlights of the trek is Juda Ka Talab, a frozen alpine lake nestled in a forest clearing. Covered in snow and ice, it looks straight out of a fairy tale and serves as a perfect campsite.

The most thrilling part of the trek is the summit push. You wake up around 3:00 AM and climb the final ridge in sub-zero temperatures. As you reach the summit at 12,500 ft, the sunrise unveils panoramic views of the Yamunotri and Gangotri ranges, with golden sunlight reflecting off endless snowfields. The summit is marked by a small shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva and offers sweeping views of Har Ki Dun Valley, Swargarohini peaks, and Rupin Pass.

The Kedarkantha Trek slightly tests your endurance but rewards you with one of the most memorable summit views in the Indian Himalayas, making it a must-do winter trek.
